Shoreland Landscaping Workshop held near Malmo Stabilizing Shoreland through Landscaping With Native Plants was the topic of a workshop held in September. Local volunteers spent the day planting native vegetation, learning about native plant options, and learning ideas that can be applied to their own shorelines. Over one thousand plants were installed! Shoreland Landscaping Workshop Planned Near Wahkon Another workshop is planned for the spring of 2012! This will be another hands-on workshop highlighting the selection of native plants that can be used to stabilize and naturalize the lakeshore. This workshop will be held at a residential property just west of Wahkon. Watch for more information coming as spring approaches! Benefits of landscaping with native plants are many. Native plants at the waters edge can filter runoff, keeping nutrients from reaching the water. They can also control soil erosion and provide habitat for numerous species of wildlife. Colorful blooms can enhance the beauty of your property, and the vegetation can even reduce the time spent on yard maintenance. This workshop will explain how you can have these benefits without giving up the ways that you enjoy your property. These programs are offered through the cooperative efforts of the Mille Lacs Lake Watershed Management Group, and the Knight and Fellegy families. Funding for the workshops is provided through a Clean Water Fund Grant awarded by the Minnesota Board of Water and Soil Resources.
